Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice and elegant but wrong fit I bought this for my high school class reunion. The color and fabric are nice and elegant, classy but not pretentious. However, unfortunately, the cut was wrong. I love sheath dress because that does not cut my 2P torso at waste line. The bottom was slightly big but the top was pretty tight. Again, as I love the dress so much, I brought it to my seamstress.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect I bought a Biscay sheath last Summer that had narrow stripes of dark blue, light blue, white, and red, and the cut of this dress is identical. I really love the simplicity and elegance of the cut on this dress. It is so easy to wear—-just throw on a coordinating jacket or cardigan and you’re good to go just about anywhere. The problem with this year’s version is that there is poor pattern matching. While the stripes line up well on the side and and back seams, they are not symmetric around the bust darts and shoulders, and it is very noticeable when you look at yourself in the mirror. It has to do with attention to detail when the pieces are cut out of the bolt of fabric. They will not align perfectly at the seams during sewing if they are not cut perfectly from the fabric. Last year’s version had this attention to detail, with perfect matching and symmetry all around.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from another fit issue This is a very pretty dress. But in my usual 8 petite, it literally swam around my hips. Another fit pattern gone wrong. i didn't rate it a running extremely large but it's definitely big in the hips.

Questions

I am 5'4" - 125 lbs, short torso, small bust, waist but curvy hips - what is best size for this dress and other Talbots Sheath style dresses? Thank you.

Asked by: laxmom38
Have you checked the size guide that is present on all pages? And taken your own measurements? You may find that petites fit you best. I have the same proportional problem (although I'm only 5'1" and weigh a lot more than you do now), so I have always had to buy the size that will fit my hips and have the top taken in (and often taken up at the shoulders), with almost any vendor's clothing. The issue with a short waist is whether or not the top of the dress is too long to effectively shorten - and that I can't answer with this line since I haven't tried anything of theirs on in many years. I've learned to eyeball whether or not the torso is going to work for me or not pretty well for myself, but that's a matter of decades of experience. The less tightly fitted it is, the more likely it is going to be possible to alter it well.
